What Lies Beneath: An Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods

Registration for this workshop has closed.

"Everything that can be counted does not necessarily count; everything that counts cannot necessarily be counted." — Albert Einstein

As noted by one of the great thinkers of the 20th century, quantitative research alone cannot provide all the answers to our profession’s many questions. A review of the profession’s two seminal journals—Journal of PA Education and Journal of the American Academy of PAs—demonstrates that PA research relies far too heavily on surveys and quasi-experimental study designs. These research methods are important; however, they cannot help researchers understand such important questions as “how” or “why.” Take research on inclusion and diversity as an example. Surveys cannot adequately help the researcher understand another’s lived experience. Only qualitative research methodology can do that.

Few PA educators feel competent to conduct qualitative research. This two-day workshop is designed to help attendees learn about robust qualitative research methods and strengthen their skills by participating in active and immersive learning activities. Facilitators will explore each step of the qualitative research process by guiding attendees through the creation of a qualitative study in real-time. We will start with a pre-determined research question. Working individually, in pairs, with table mates, and as a large group, the facilitators will guide participants through the steps of collecting rich data, generating initial codes, identifying themes, and validating findings. The session will conclude with “speed dating” to allow participants to connect with colleagues and co-create a network of qualitative researchers—a network the PA educator profession so desperately needs. Attendees will come away with a deeper understanding of robust qualitative methods and will experience the joy of collaboration, creativity, and discovery.
